Into Ladakh...

From Srinagar we hopped in a shared jeep for the journey east to the Ladakhi capital of Leh. The distance between the cities is only about 400 Km (about 200 miles) but it took us 17 hours to span the gap, a testament to the nature of the rugged Himalayan seasonal road. At 65ish our driver, a 15 year veteran of the circuit, skillfully piloted the long ride singlehandedly.

Caravan of army trucks--there is a serious military presence.

These trucks move most of the goods in Himalayan India.

The region is largely populated by seasonally nomadic herders.

To give a sense of scale, the white dots on the left are large canvas tents.
